The Art House

A captivating two-storey re-design in Primrose Hill has transformed a family home into a harmonious blend of artistic celebration and intimate living. Designed for a family of art lovers and collectors, the home reflects their deep connection to Japanese art and culture, nurtured during their five years living in Tokyo, Japan.

The interior re-design spans two interconnected floors, guided by a vision to create a home that is both functional and curated. Drawing inspiration from Japanese aesthetics, the design integrates traditional elements with the inclusion of bespoke joinery and textural upholstery to the living room adding depth and interest, and modern influences incorporating whitewashed timber and marble in the deVOL x Sebastian Cox designed kitchen, fostering a sense of harmony and flow throughout the home. Clean lines and open spaces create a minimalist canvas, highlighting original beams and architectural details, while playful details such as textured surfaces and coloured tiles add moments of contemporary vibrancy.

The re-design is a testament to their passion for art, showcasing an exquisite collection curated over years of travel. Pieces from notable and emerging Japanese artists Hiroka Yamashita, Ulala Imai, Takuro Kuwata, Koichi Enomoto, Fumi Imamura, Taichi Nakamura, and Nana Funo are interwoven with works by British and US-based talents such as Alexis Soul-Gray, David Murphy, and Diane Chappalley. Contemporary Okinawan ceramics, ikebana vases, and traditional Mingei crafts further enrich the space, while striking photography by Daido Moriyama, Nobuyoshi Araki, and Masao Yamamoto punctuates the home’s serene flow.

The transformation stands as both a family sanctuary and a celebration of artful living. Seamlessly uniting Japanese influences with modern design, the home reflects a thoughtful balance of aesthetics and functionality. Every detail, from curated artworks to bespoke craftsmanship, tells a story of cultural appreciation and personal expression, resulting in a timeless and soulful space that inspires and delights in equal measure.
